BaPsy University Admission Calculator
A German university admission eligibility calculator that evaluates Abitur scores, subject selections, and regional requirements to determine a student's chances of admission to psychology programs across 16 German states.
The Challenge
The Excel spreadsheet contained complex conditional logic for 16 different German states, each with unique admission criteria, prerequisite subjects, and grade weightings. Maintaining the spreadsheet required constant updates as universities changed their requirements, and students found it confusing to navigate.
The Solution
We converted this into a step-by-step web calculator with smart dropdown menus that adapt based on the selected state. The interface guides students through selecting their Abitur scores, subjects, and regional preferences, then instantly calculates their eligibility with clear pass/fail indicators.
Results & Impact
The web calculator is now used by thousands of prospective psychology students across Germany. The step-by-step interface reduced support inquiries by 60% compared to the original downloadable spreadsheet.

Project Deep Dive
The BaPsy admission calculator posed a unique technical challenge: 16 German states, each with completely different admission criteria for psychology programs. The original Excel spreadsheet handled this with deeply nested IF statements and conditional formatting that showed or hid different sections based on the selected state. It worked, but only for users who understood the spreadsheet's quirky navigation.
We rebuilt the logic as a multi-step web form where each step adapts dynamically based on previous selections. When a student selects their state, only the relevant fields appear. The underlying rules engine evaluates Abitur scores, subject prerequisites, and weighted grade calculations — all the complex logic that made the spreadsheet valuable — but presents results as simple pass/fail indicators with clear explanations of what each score means.
The web version also made it dramatically easier to update admission criteria when universities change their requirements. Instead of editing complex formulas in Excel, the criteria are stored in a structured data format that can be updated without touching the calculation logic.
Technologies Used
"Students were struggling with the Excel version — they would email us confused about which fields to fill in. The web calculator guides them through the process perfectly. Our support inbox is finally manageable."
